A 22-year-old man was Thursday arrested for allegedly stealing Amul milk pouches worth Rs 16,888 from two milk parlours in Vadodara. The accused, identified as Mohammad Darbar, told the police that he was “in need of money” and sold the stolen milk pouches to consumers.

According to an FIR lodged based on a complaint filed by Mukesh Makwana at the Gotri police station, the first incident occurred on June 28 when a total of eight crates of Amul Gold and Amul Shakti pouches were “missing”. “Usually, the Baroda Dairy tempo driver leaves several crates of milk outside my parlour at 6 am everyday. I count the crates before opening the parlour at 8 am. On June 28, milk pouches from four crates each of Gold and Shakti were missing. When the tempo driver returned to collect the empty crates, he confirmed that he had brought the same number of pouches as usual,” Makwana, who runs a milk parlour at Bhayli Road, stated in his complaint.

When he checked the CCTV footage of the milk centre, he spotted the accused, in a face mask, stealing the milk pouches by filling it in a bag and zooming away on a two-wheeler.

A similar FIR was lodged at the Sayajigunj police station by Ganpat Rathwa, who runs a milk centre at the Konkan building in Alkapuri, stating that pouches from five milk crates were stolen on June 28 in a similar fashion as in the Gotri FIR. The FIR stated that 96 pouches of Amul Gold and 24 pouches of Shakti — worth Rs 3,798 — were stolen. Rathwa also complained of theft on July 4 when 120 pouches of Amul Gold and 24 pouches of Amul Shakti worth Rs 4,594 were stolen.

According to both FIRs, the accused committed a theft worth Rs 16,888 as the cost of one crate of Amul Gold is Rs 748 and Shakti is Rs 678.

Darbar has been booked under IPC section 379 for theft.

Gotri police inspector MK Gurjar said Darbar was identified from the CCTV footage at both the centres. The police have recovered the two-wheeler as well as the money that Darbar made by selling the milk. “He has said that he was in need of money and thought that this would be an easy way to earn some cash. We are probing the case to understand if he has been involved in any other theft cases in the city,” Gurjar said.
