5 dist collectors slapped notices for not attending workshop on EVM, VVPAT

The Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra has slapped notices to the collectors of Satara, Solapur, Latur, Mumbai City and Amravati for not attending the EVM/VVPAT first-level checking workshop held on June 23 and asked them to respond by June 28.

The workshop was organised on the directions of the Election Commission of India (ECI) for the collectors, who also work as district election officers.

“The Election Commission of India, vide its letter under reference, had directed the Chief Electoral Officers of all States to conduct EVM/VVPAT FLC workshop in their respective state as per schedule prescribed by Commission. Accordingly, this office had arranged the aforesaid workshop on 23rd June, 2023, at YASHADA, Pune. It was mandatory for all Collectors and District Election Officers and all Deputy District Election Officers to attend the said important workshop. Those officers, who could not attend the workshop for any reason, had to take prior permission from the Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra, mentioning specific valid reasons,” said the letter issued by Shrikant Deshpande, CEO, Maharashtra.

“It has come to notice that you remained absent from the above important workshop as scheduled by the Election Commission of India. The Election Commission of India has taken this very seriously, as this workshop was critical for ensuing FLC and subsequent EVM related process,” said the letter.

“You are, therefore, requested to submit explanation regarding your absentee from above workshop urgently and before 05.00 pm on 28.06.2023 without fail so,” it said.
