After a report by IAS officer Dhaval Patel over ‘rotten education’ in government schools sparked a political row in Gujarat, District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) of Chhota Udepur has issued four directives in three days for primary schools. Making teachers aware of circulars issued by the Education Department and training and monitoring the staff are among the corrective measures in focus.

In his report submitted to Secretary of Education Vinod Rao with a copy to the Director of Primary Education, administration, and education officials of Chhota Udepur district based on his observations during the enrolment drive of Shala Praveshotsav on June 12 and 13, Dhaval Patel, Commissioner Geology and Mining, flagged the “rotten” state of education of government primary schools and cases of mass copying during the annual examination in five out of six schools he visited.

“During the video conference in the presence of the Secretary of Education and Commissioner with all teachers of six schools, cluster resource cent co-ordinators, block resource centre co-ordinators, there were wrong responses on many issues by principals and teachers during questioning. The secretary has directed to ensure monitoring and training arrangements of teachers in this regard,” stated the circular issued by DPEO Chhota Udepur Imran Soni.

The circular, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, further adds that despite repeated instructions, the image of the entire district is being damaged due to apathy and disinterest among staff. Patel visited six government primary schools in Chhota Udepur district: Timla Primary School, Rangpur Primary School, Bodgam Primary School and Wadhwan Primary School, Jamli Primary School, Ranikheda. The visits took place during the annual statewide enrolment drive of Shala Praveshotsav where he randomly selected students from Classes 2-8, and asked questions from their annual examination of previous classes.

“During the video conference held on June 21 with these six schools, it was realised that teachers could not answer questions related to circulars issued by the government. Consequently, we have created QR codes for all these circulars that will be displayed in all the classrooms,” DPEO Imran Soni told The Indian Express.

“Due to neglect and laziness of the staff, students should not be deprived of government schemes. It is not acceptable. All teachers in the district should be aware of all government schemes and should study them and ensure these are implemented properly in the schools. With this objective, a workshop will be organised on July 7. All teachers should be present in the workshop and should come prepared,” he added. “School teachers have also committed to staying after school hours till 5 pm. Similar teams have been prepared for all village schools along border to find out shortcomings if any,” he added.
