IMD warns of heavy rain this week

As southwest monsoon advanced into the remaining parts of Gujarat, thus covering the entire state on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall for the state this week.

Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey assessed the situation at a meeting with members of the weather watch group at the State Emergency Operation Group (SEOC) centre in Gandhinagar. Along with reviewing the preparedness of all concerned departments, necessary guidance and suggestions were issued to officials.

The IMD officials informed in the meeting that while from June 28 to 30, there is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in Navsari and Valsad districts of south Gujarat, light to moderate rain is probable across Gujarat this week.

According to irrigation department officials, of the 206 reservoirs in the state, six are on high alert with water nearing the danger mark, three on alert and one has been issued warning, a release issued by the state government said. As per NDRF and SDRF officials, a deployment plan has been prepared and all teams have been put on alert mode.

The IMD warning for Wednesday stated, “Heavy to very heavy rain very likely with isolated extremely heavy falls in the districts of south Gujarat, namely Navsari and Valsad. Heavy to very heavy rain very likely in the districts of south Gujarat, namely Surat, Dang and Tapi, along with districts of Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada and Bharuch… in the districts of Saurashtra, namely Rajkot, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath and Botad.”

It added that on June 29, “heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in Navsari and Valsad… Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in the districts of south Gujarat, including Narmada, Surat, Dang and Tapi; in the districts of Saurashtra, namely Porbandar, Junagadh, Bhavnagar and Gir Somnath”. According to the forecast for June 30, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Navsari and Valsad. Heavy rain is very likely in the districts of north Gujarat, including Sabarkantha and Aravalli and in the Saurashtra districts of Porbandar, Junagadhand Gir Somnath.

The IMD further said that heavy rain is likely in south Gujarat districts of Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad and Saurashtra districts of Amreli and Gir Somnath on July 1.
