Days after a 34-year-old school teacher was electrocuted outside the New Delhi Railway Station, the Delhi Police has bound down a senior section engineer of the railways and will question him about the exposed wires lying around electric poles and meters in the premises.
The Railways official, Bharat Bhushan (40), has been issued a warrant and the investigation is the process, said police, adding that they are awaiting the final report from the Railways to take further legal action.
On Sunday, Sakshi Ahuja (34) was walking towards NDLS Gate No. 1 when she accidentally slipped and fell. She held onto the pole for support but came in contact with exposed wires and was electrocuted in front of her children, aged six and 10. She and her family were going to Chandigarh for a vacation.
During the probe, police said the exposed wires as well as waterlogged streets due to the rain in the city led to the incident. A letter was written to Northern Railways to investigate the matter and “fix responsibility” in the case.
DCP (Railways) Apoorva Gupta said, “The spot was inspected by the designated Railway Authority from a technical angle. The report of the same is awaited. The inspecting team removed the cables from the place of the incident and handed them over to the investigating officer. The cables/wires have been seized as a piece of evidence.”
“On Wednesday, senior section engineer Bhushan was asked to join the investigation. After his interrogation, he has been bound down under CrPC,” she added.
Bhushan has been serving in the Railways for years and lives in Railways Flats in Kishan Ganj.
The Northern Railways on Monday had said that it formed a committee to probe the incident and also conducted a safety audit.
“The Railways is responsible for maintenance of all electrical installations on its premises. We are awaiting a report from the GRP (Government Railway Police)” said an officer.
Ahuja is survived by her husband Ankit who works at a Japanese firm and their two children. The family lives in East Delhi where she worked at a private school as a teacher and was also a freelance architect.
