FOUR PERSONS were arrested from Haryana’s Ambala district on Saturday for their alleged involvement in the firing on Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad in Deoband on Wednesday, police said.

The four were apprehended in a joint operation by the Haryana and the Uttar Pradesh police, Haryana Special Task Force Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Aman Kumar said. They were arrested from the Shahzadpur area in Ambala, Kumar said. He identified the accused as Vikas of Haryana and Vikas, Prashant and Lovish of Uttar Pradesh.

Vikas belonged to Gonder village in Haryana’s Karnal district while the three others hailed from Rankhandi village in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur area, the DSP said. Kumar said that no weapon was seized from the four accused, who were handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police later in the day.

Uttar Pradesh Special Director General of Police (Law and Order), Prashant Kumar said that the case “is on our priority” and police teams have been formed to investigate it. He added that the motive behind the attack would become clear after questioning of the accused.

On June 28, Aazad (36) attended a ‘terahvin’ ritual at a supporter’s home in Saharanpur district’s Deoband and assailants fired “four shots” at his SUV when he was leaving. Aazad was injured and was discharged after treatment from a hospital in Saharanpur the next day.

He hit out at the law and order situation in UP. He also warned that other leaders may also face similar attacks. “Such incidents can happen with heads of any other political parties and their supporters, too,” he said in a statement. This, he claimed, is due to two reasons: “The law and order situation in UP is getting worse, and the government is providing protection to criminals on the basis of caste and religion, due to which government-backed criminals are in high spirits,” alleged Aazad in a statement.
