Phones seized in Yerawada prison, sixth time since April

IN A sweep conducted at the barracks where undertrials live in Yerawada Central Prison, following specific information, authorities at the jail seized two cell phones along with separate batteries and SIM cards. This is the sixth instance of seizure of cell phones or phone components since April this year.

The latest set of seizures were reported from Tilak yard and circle 1 of the central prison on June 28. An FIR in the case was registered at Yerawada police station on Saturday under provisions of the Prisons Act, 1894. Based on the complaint filed by a circle jail officer, police have booked seven undertrial inmates.The seized items included two cell phones, two batteries and four SIM cards.

In the previous seizure on June 25, Yerawada central prison authorities had recovered four cellphone batteries — two inserted into two tennis balls each, wherein slits had been made to accommodate them, and four cellphones neatly packaged in sets of two with cotton and sticking tapes.
