Ram Gopal Varma’s film Satya, which was released on July 3, 1998, led to an important shift in the Hindi film industry, especially during a time when romance movies were dominating the scene. On Monday, the movie completed 25 years since its release. The film featured J.D. Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpayee, Saurabh Shukla, Shefali Shah, Makrand Deshpande, Govind Namdeo, and Urmila Matondkar in key roles.

In an interview with Film Companion, RGV revealed the reason behind naming his film Satya, which left Bajpayee, Shukla and Shahid in splits. He said, “There was no protagonist in my mind at that time just because it’s called Satya. Otherwise the film belongs to every character. It was not like one particular character is playing the hero and someone is the villain. Satya, the name actually belongs to a girl I was in love with in college. So I wanted to impress her.”

The filmmaker added, “That’s the only reason (for naming the film Satya). To justify that, I called Chakri (JD Chakravarthy) also Satya.”

Ram Gopal Varma had earlier opened up about his one sided love story on social media. Taking to Twitter, the director wrote, “My land mark film SATYA and Sridevi’s name in KSHANA KSHANAM were named after ⁦@PolavarapuSatya⁩ ..Incidentally these pics are her today’s present photos she sent me from Miami Beach.”

He added, “I felt she didn’t care about me because of another rich handsome guy and that’s how I wrote Rangeela’s story.”
