Over 60 cows and 17 goats were allegedly taken away from a man in Faridabad’s Khori Jamalpur village Friday night, police said. The man and his family alleged those behind the act were from the Bajrang Dal.
Police said the complainants in the case, who are from the village, found a cow tied to a tractor. “In a bid to rescue it, they called police and lodged a complaint of cow slaughtering. We have registered a case,” said an officer.
Sohna police station SHO Santosh Kumar said he was not aware of Bajrang Dal. There were only the complainants and villagers at the spot, he said.
According to villagers, Jamat Ali owned the cows, and two boys in their family were herding them.
Ali’s nephew Zubair (23) alleged: “We were preparing for a wedding in the family on June 30. That night, the two boys came and said many men brandishing swords were in our field. We came to know they were from Bajrang Dal, so we didn’t go out. The next morning, when we reached the field, they were taking 55 cows, 17 goats and 13 calves in pickup trucks. The men lodged a complaint against us and an FIR was registered at Sohna police station.”
Ali and his son, along with four others, went to meet Gurgaon Police Commissioner Kala Ramachandran regarding the case. CP Ramachandran said, “ACP Sohna is looking into the matter. The owner has not yet provided any proof of ownership.”
Zubair said the cattle were the only source of income for the family and that they did not even own a tractor. “Cow slaughter is banned, but is there a new law stating Muslims can’t own cows now?” he asked.
“They are targeting our business in the name of cow protection, and this will only affect our already poverty-stricken family. We never slaughtered cows… Despite being the wronged party, we have a case against us,” said Ali’s other nephew Yusuf Khan.
Yusuf said they gave a complaint but it was yet to be accepted by Dhauj police station.
Zubair further alleged, “Even yesterday, those goons came again and picked a fight with us and later sought police protection. Police were also at the site when they took our cattle away, they didn’t do anything despite our repeated pleas.”
Meanwhile, Bajrang Dal’s Faridabad leader Pankaj said that they were informed of the incident of cow slaughter by villagers and they “rescued” over 50 cows and sent them to a gaushala.
