Scheduled to be held on the 15-16th of July in Hanle, the 3rd edition of Ladakh Nomadic Festival will put the spotlight on the region’s nomadic culture and traditions

The union territory ranks high on the list of adventure junkies and cultural enthusiasts alike, and also organises many festivals to showcase its rich diversity. One such event is the Ladakh Nomadic Festival, which celebrates the cultural heritage of the region’s nomadic communities.

The Nomadic Festival Of Ladakh
The Changpa is the nomadic pastoralist community of Ladakh and is mainly known for raising goats and yaks. Apart from these, there are three other distinct nomadic communities in Ladakh known as Kharnak, Rupshu and Korzok who have their own territories. The Changpa community lives at a very high altitude with no access to basic resources. But it is Hanle, in the land of Changpas, that the Nomadic Festival is organised.

A celebration of the authentic culture Ladakh has, this festival offers a glimpse to the visitors about the culture, norms and traditions of the nomadic community. Organised by Ladakh Cultural Academy in association with the tourism and culture department of Leh, this festival showcases the rich culture, traditions and way of living of the nomads. Apart from highlighting the lives of this community, the festival also aims at creating awareness about the need to preserve their cultural heritage.

During this festival, Hanle in Changthang turns into a vibrant gathering where ravellers to immerse themselves in nomadic traditions and knowledge, feast on delicacies made from age-old recipes and learn more about the lives of the communities.

Communities belonging from different parts of the region come together and showcase their distinct dance forms, music and handicrafts. Artisans get to showcase their skills through complex weaving and pottery and travellers get to test their skills at sports like polo and archery. It also provides a platform to discuss issues such as climate change and sustainability.
About Hanle
The Hanle village in Ladakh hosts the Nomadic Festival and the village in itself is like a paradise because of its scenic landscape.It is located in one of the highest altitudes of Ladakh and offers a beautiful view of small snow capped mountains and a sky suitable for stargazing. Hanle also has India’s highest sky observatory that requires a permit from the deputy commissioner office from Leh in order to be visited.
