According to Minister of State for Communications Devusinh Chauhan, the Prime Minister’s Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) framework has successfully deployed around one lakh 48 thousand Wi-Fi hotspots in India, including rural and backward areas as of March 9th. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, he revealed that 158 companies have registered as Public Data Office Aggregators in the Central Registry for PM-WANI as of the same date.
The PM-WANI framework, which was launched in December 2020, aims to provide affordable and accessible internet connectivity to all citizens in the country. Under this initiative, any entity can set up public Wi-Fi hotspots and provide internet services without the need for a license or registration. The framework also allows for the creation of a Central Registry of all Wi-Fi hotspots, which can be accessed by users through a mobile application.
