In the coming weeks, The UK Home Office is set to make an announcement in a bid to revive stalled talks and take firm action against Sikh extremist elements.

India has temporarily suspended trade discussions with the United Kingdom and has requested that the UK condemn Sikh extremists. The move comes in response to recent protests by Sikh extremists in the UK, which India claims were organized by extremist groups.

The suspension of trade talks was announced by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry on April 10, 2023. The Ministry released a statement saying that India would not engage in trade negotiations with the UK until the UK government publicly condemns Sikh extremists and takes action to prevent their activities in the country.

The statement reads, “India has taken note of the recent protests in the United Kingdom organized by extremist Sikh groups. These groups are known to have links with terrorist organizations and have been responsible for violent activities in India. India expects the UK government to take immediate action to prevent such groups from operating in the UK and to condemn their activities in the strongest possible terms.”

The protests in question were held in London on March 26, 2023, by Sikh activists who were demonstrating against alleged human rights violations by the Indian government. The protesters also demanded the release of Sikh prisoners who are currently being held in Indian jails. The protests were peaceful, but India claims that they were organized by extremist groups who have been responsible for violence in the past.

India’s decision to suspend trade talks with the UK is likely to have a significant impact on bilateral relations between the two countries. The UK is one of India’s major trading partners, with bilateral trade worth around $15 billion in 2022. The suspension of trade talks is likely to affect the negotiations on a free trade agreement between India and the UK, which have been ongoing since 2018.

The UK government has not yet responded to India’s request to condemn Sikh extremists. However, the issue is likely to be a sensitive one for the UK, which has a significant Sikh population. Sikhs in the UK have been vocal in their support for the protests in India, and some have called for the UK government to take a more active role in addressing human rights violations in the country.

India’s decision to suspend trade talks with the UK has been criticized by some as an overreaction. According to Rupa Subramanya, a Mumbai-based economist and commentator, “Suspending trade talks is a drastic step and could have far-reaching consequences. It is important for India to engage with the UK and other countries in order to promote trade and investment.”

However, others have supported India’s move, arguing that it is necessary to take a strong stance against terrorism and extremism. According to Mohan Guruswamy, chairman of the Centre for Policy Alternatives in New Delhi, “India has a responsibility to protect its citizens from terrorism and extremism. It is important for the UK government to condemn Sikh extremists and take action to prevent their activities in the country.”

The suspension of trade talks is not the first time that India has taken a strong stance against perceived support for Sikh separatism in the UK. In 2018, India raised objections to the presence of a pro-Khalistan rally in London, which was attended by British MPs. The Indian government had claimed that the rally was organized by Sikh extremist groups and had links to terrorism.

The UK has a significant Sikh population, with around 500,000 people of Sikh origin living in the country. Sikhs in the UK have been vocal in their support for the protests in India and have called for the UK government to take a more active role in addressing human rights violations in the country. However, the UK government has been cautious in its response, calling for peaceful dialogue between the Indian government and Sikh activists.

The suspension of trade talks between India and the UK is likely to be a blow to bilateral relations between the two countries. However, it remains to be seen whether the UK government will respond to India’s offer of a free trade deal or whether it will pursue an alternative route. It is also uncertain as to how this situation will affect the economic growth prospects of both countries in the short and long terms.
