Ceiling caves in during heavy rain in Pune; 50-year-old killed, one injured

One person was killed and another from his family was injured after the ceiling of the ground floor of a two-storey house in Pune Camp caved in on Monday evening during heavy rain.

The incident was reported from Dastur Meher road in Pune Camp around 7.15 pm.

The Pune Fire Brigade officials identified the deceased as Stanley D’Souza (50) and the injured as Gerry D’Souza (60). Both were rushed to Sassoon General Hospital, where Stanley was declared dead. Gerry is being treated for serious injuries.

“Two persons were trapped under the debris. One person died and another sustained injuries. There were two or three more people in the house at the time. They escaped unhurt,” said Rohit Ranpise from Pune Cantonment Fire Brigade.

“Primary observations suggest that it is an old house. The Pune City Fire Brigade control room received a call around 7.30 pm. One fire tender from Pune Cantonment Fire Brigade and two from Pune City were deployed considering the seriousness of the incident. Those trapped under the debris were shifted in an ambulance,” he said.
