The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune and its surrounding ghat regions for 48 hours. An orange alert indicates the probability of heavy (64.5 mm-115.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours) to very heavy (115.5-204.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours) rainfall.

The monsoon is in an active to vigorous state in and around Pune city, which has recorded around 7 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, most of it at night. The city has received around 52 mm of precipitation this season.

Dr Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune, had already said the city would receive good showers for the next five days due to multiple low-pressure areas.

The IMD’s advisory for the Pune city area has said it would receive moderate (15.5-64.5 mm of rain in 24 hours) rain, with a few intense spells for the next 48 hours. This will likely cause water stagnation in low-lying areas, traffic snarls and accidents.

The impact-based advisories issued by the IMD talked of localised flooding and a minor reduction in visibility. Also, localised mudslides and landslides are expected in a few areas. The IMD has also warned the public of damage to old and dilapidated structures.

Pune reported its first casualty due to rain this monsoon season on Monday. A man was killed, and a family member was injured after the ceiling of the ground floor of a two-storey house in Pune Camp caved in during heavy rain.
