Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar on Tuesday condemned the incident where a 19-year-old college student was attacked with a koyta (machete) in Pune and hit out at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, for the worsening law and order situation in the city.

“Perhaps, the home minister is too busy playing political games and is not getting any time to handle the law and order situation,” Pawar said in a post on Twitter.

“In Pune, which is known as the home of education, crime has become widespread. Criminals have no fear of the law. Female students are getting assaulted with koytas in broad daylight. Known far and wide as a cultured city, Pune had never been so violent. I condemn the incident in strongest terms,” Pawar, who has been Pune’s guardian minister for many years, further said.

On Tuesday morning, a man identified by police as Shantanu Laxman Jadhav, armed with a machete, attacked a 19-year-old college student in Pune’s Sadashiv Peth. The girl suffered injuries to her head and limbs but is out of danger, the police said.
