Administrative, legislative measures afoot to root out corruption: Karnataka Governor

In his address to the joint session of the state legislature, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot Monday said the government will take administrative and legislative measures to root out corruption entrenched in the system. The joint session was held sans a Leader of Opposition as the BJP was yet to appoint its leaders for the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.

The Governor said, “Corruption has become so entrenched in our system that for many reasons it has become almost institutionalised. Eradicating it is a major challenge. I seek your cooperation to meet this challenge and root out corruption. The government will take all necessary administrative and legislative measures in this regard.”

Weighing in on Artificial Intelligence, he said that while the technology opened unparalleled opportunities, it has also created an atmosphere of fear.

“Any technology can be used for the benefit of mankind but at the same time can also be misused. Therefore, many countries have understood the need to regulate Artificial Intelligence. My Government will take appropriate measures to ensure only positive people-oriented use of Artificial Intelligence,” the Governor said.

The government, he said, intended “to build a modern Karnataka by treating agriculture, industry and service sector as equal priorities” and “create a people-centric economy”. Noting that the government wanted to set up industries that create more local jobs, he said that the government has realised that it “is inevitable that we have to compete not only with neighbouring states in our production, distribution and marketing system, but also with distant countries like China; we will formulate plans towards this goal and implement them.”

Among the priorities of the state government, he said, was to endeavour to make Bengaluru “a cynosure of the world” by properly planning and creating all the necessary civic systems including roads, rainwater drains, parks, playgrounds, public transport, and libraries, among others. “My Government is committed to make Bengaluru a healthy, sustainably developed city by solving the problem of traffic congestion to the extent possible,” he added.
