After 2 fatal incidents, Atishi writes to Delhi L-G demanding action

The Delhi government’s Public Work Department (PWD) Minister, Atishi, has written a letter to the Lieutenant Governor, demanding strict action against officers responsible for the death of two persons in two different incidents — an auto drive who fell into a water-filled pit in Harsh Nagar and a construction worker allegedly electrocuted to death at LNJP hospital.

In a letter to L-G, she wrote, “In the last two days, two tragic incidents have come to the fore in Delhi. In the first accident, two days ago in Harsh Nagar, the auto driver fell into a water-filled pit and died. The reason for this accident has been the negligence of the PWD officers. The second incident is of LNJP Hospital, where a worker died due to electrocution during the construction work today.”

The minister said, “Despite these accidents, you are sitting silently. It has been two days since the auto driver passed (away), but you have neither taken any action in this matter nor cared to say anything about it.”

She said, “Sir, in the black ordinance brought by the central government, you have been given the power of services. It means, whether to take any action on any officer, whether to suspend him or transfer him, it is all in your hands. But even after two deaths, you probably haven’t woken up from your sleep. This is the reason why you are sitting quietly and not taking any action against the officers whose negligence has resulted in loss of lives.”

“That’s why the elected government of the state should have the power to suspend the officers, take action on them and transfer them. That is why we have gone to court against this black ordinance,” she wrote.

L-G house was not available for comment on the matter.

Atishi demanded action against the officers concerned. She said, “I would like to tell you that until the court’s decision on this black ordinance comes, you have the power of services, you will have to take immediate action against these careless officers… you have to break your silence and take immediate action, otherwise the people of Delhi will continue to suffer like this.”
