Amid heavy rain, Ropar district issues red alert

In the wake of heavy rainfall, Ropar’s district administration on Sunday issued a red alert and suspended all railway services until further orders.

The decision has been taken as the district is one of the most flood-prone areas in the state as the Satluj river flows through the district and many other water bodies including seasonal rivulets are located in the area.

Ropar Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav chaired a meeting with various police and civil administration officials and instructed them to visit the flood-prone areas with their teams. The officials of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) were also present in the meeting and apprised the district administration about the water level in Bhakra dam.

Meanwhile, the officials said that the situation was under control and there was no need to panic. However, they called for keeping a close eye on the Satluj river and advised residents living in low-lying areas to remain alert.

The deputy commissioner advised people to call at the helpline number 112 in case of any emergency and urged them to not travel on canal side roads. She also requested the general public to inform the flood control room numbers of the helpline in case they notice any rise of water level in rivulets.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivek Sheel Soni said that people should come out of home only in case of urgent work.

The deputy commissioner also declared a holiday on Monday in all the private and government schools, and other educational institutions in the district.

Meanwhile, several reports from rural areas claim that water entered the fields and destroyed the paddy crop.
