Ride-hailing giant Uber has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Motors, one of India’s leading automakers, to bring 25,000 electric vehicles (EVs) onto its platform. This is a major move by the company towards electrification and sustainability, and the largest commitment yet between an automaker and a ridesharing platform in India.

Under the MoU, Tata Motors will begin delivering its XPRES-T EVs to Uber’s fleet partners in a phased manner starting from this month. The partnership will initially focus on seven major Indian cities, including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Ahmedabad, with the aim of aiding the electrification of Uber services across the country.

The XPRES-T EV, a fully electric sedan developed by Tata Motors, has a range of up to 213 kilometers on a single charge and comes equipped with features such as dual airbags, regenerative braking, and a connected vehicle system. This is in line with Uber’s commitment to provide its riders with safe, reliable, and sustainable mobility options.

The move towards electrification is a key part of Uber’s global strategy to become a zero-emissions platform by 2040. In India, the company has already taken several steps in this direction, including the launch of its Uber Green service, which offers riders the option to choose an electric vehicle for their ride.

Commenting on the partnership with Tata Motors, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, said, “Our partnership with Tata Motors will be a key accelerator to our goal of electrifying our platform, bringing zero-emission mobility to millions of Indians while supporting our driver-partners to enhance their earnings.”

Prabhjeet Singh also said in a statement, “Uber is committed to bringing sustainable and shared mobility to India. This partnership with Tata Motors is a major milestone in that journey. It represents the largest EV partnership yet between an automaker and a ride-sharing platform in India.” Uber has committed to 100 per cent of rides taking place in zero-emission vehicles, on public transit, or with micro-mobility by 2040.

As Uber continues to move towards its zero-emissions goal, the partnership with Tata Motors will lay the groundwork for the meaningful expansion of four-wheeler electric vehicles (EVs) on a mobility platform in India.
Uber has committed to 100% of rides taking place in zero-emission vehicles, on public transit, or with micro-mobility by 2040. Uber is focused on finding new, innovative, and affordable ways to help drivers and fleets go electric and will lean in on industry partnerships across EV manufacturers, Fleets, and EV infra partners among others to advance EV transition.

Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility informed that working towards the aim of growing India’s e-mobility market, they are delighted to announce their partnership with Uber, India’s leading ridesharing app, for their expansion of sustainable mobility options.

This move is expected to have a significant impact on the adoption of electric vehicles in India, which has been relatively slow compared to other countries. With Uber’s wide network and Tata Motors’ expertise in manufacturing and designing EVs, the partnership is expected to pave the way for a more sustainable future for transportation in the country.
