With the lake levels dipping below 7 per cent, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will impose a 10 per cent cut in water supply in Mumbai city from July 1, confirmed civic body officials after a proposal was put forth by the hydraulic department.
Mumbai receives its daily water supply from seven lakes – Tansa, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tulsi, Vehar, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna –most of which are located on the outskirts of Mumbai and neighbouring districts like Thane, Bhiwandi and Nashik.
However, Wednesday’s data showed that Mumbai’s water stock level in all seven lakes rose to 7.26 per cent. In 2022, the water stock on June 28 stood at 9.04 per cent, while it was around 16.88 per cent in 2021.
Despite heavy showers which the city witnessed with the onset of monsoon, the lake levels until Tuesday morning remained below seven per cent, at 6.97 per cent.
The civic body announced a 15 per cent water cut in Mumbai last year, after the water levels dipped below 20 per cent in June.
During monsoon, the catchment areas of the lakes get filled up and water from these lakes is supplied to the city suburbs of Mumbai, through tunnels and water pipelines.
