BJP and Its Coalition Partners Triumph in Tripura and Nagaland Polls, Meghalaya in a State of Uncertainty

The results of the Assembly elections in Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya have been announced. In Tripura, the BJP-IPFT alliance has won the majority with 33 seats, with BJP winning 32 seats. The CPM-Congress alliance has won 14 seats with CPM winning 11 and Congress winning 3 seats. TIPRA MOTHA has secured 13 seats. The Chief Minister and BJP candidate, Dr. Manik Saha, has won from the Town Bardowali constituency with a vote share of 49.77%.

In Nagaland, the NDPP-BJP alliance has won 37 seats with NDPP winning 25 and BJP winning 12 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has won 7 seats, while the National People’s Party and Independents have secured 5 and 4 seats respectively. BJP candidate Kazheto Kinimi has won from the Akuluto constituency unopposed. The incumbent Chief Minister and NDPP candidate, Neiphiu Rio, has won from the Northern Angami-II assembly constituency with a vote share of 92.87%. Other leaders such as Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Y Patton, state BJP president Temjen Imna Along, former Chief Minister T R Zeliang, NPF leader Kuzholuzo Neinu, and NCP leader Pongshi Phom have also emerged victorious. In a historic first for the state, two women candidates, Hekani Jakhalu Kense and Salhoutuonuo Kruse, both from NDPP, have won the elections.

In Meghalaya, the ruling party National People’s Party (NPP) has emerged as the single largest party with 26 seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) has won 11 seats, while Congress and TMC have won five seats each. The newly-formed Voice of the People Party has secured 4 seats, and BJP has won two seats. HSPDP, PDF, and Independents have also won 2 seats each. In the Amlarem-7 constituency, Lakhmen Rymbui of UDP defeated his nearest rival Stephanson Mukhim of NPP by a margin of just 167 votes. In the Nartiang constituency, NPP candidate Sniawbhalang Dhar defeated Emlang Laloo of Congress by a margin of 2,123 votes. The Chief Minister and NPP candidate, Conrad Sangma, have won from the South Tura Assembly seat with a vote share of 49.42%. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tysong of NPP has also emerged victorious from the Pynursla constituency. BJP candidate Samuel M Sangma, however, lost in the Baghmara constituency.

The results of the elections in Meghalaya indicate a hung Assembly, with the ruling NPP emerging as the single largest party. Former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress candidate Mukul Sangma is contesting from two constituencies. He is leading in the Songsak constituency while trailing behind in Tikrikilla. Former Minister and NPP candidate Ampareen Lyngdoh has won East Shillong, while BJP candidate Sanbor Shullai has won South Shillong’s seat with nearly 66% of the vote share.

The results of these elections have significant implications for the political landscape of these states. The victories of the BJP-IPFT alliance in Tripura and the NDPP-BJP alliance in Nagaland indicate the continued dominance of the BJP in the Northeast region. The NPP’s emergence as the single largest party in Meghalaya, however, indicates a more complex political situation, with the possibility of the formation of a coalition government.
