Chandigarh and Punjab have emerged as the leading performers in school education, as revealed in the Union Ministry of Education’s Performance Grade Index (PGI) report for the year 2021-22. The report, released on Friday, evaluates states and Union Territories (UTs) based on indicators such as learning outcomes, equity, and infrastructure.

Both Chandigarh and Punjab have been placed in the sixth grade of the index. The PGI categorizes states and UTs into 10 levels, with the top five grades remaining unoccupied. Chandigarh and Punjab have achieved the ‘Prachesta-2’ level, which corresponds to a score between 641 and 700 out of a total of 1,000 points.

Following closely behind are six states and UTs positioned in the level below. Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Delhi, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu have attained the ‘Prachesta-3’ level, with scores ranging from 581 to 640 points. Meanwhile, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram find themselves at the lower end of the ranking, scoring between 401 and 460 points, designated as ‘Akanshi-3’.

The Performance Grade Index serves as an essential tool to assess and compare the performance of states and UTs in the field of school education. It considers various parameters such as the quality of education, access to education, and the overall development of students.
