Congress dares Kerala CM to probe charges by ex-party man against ‘minister’

The Congress in Kerala on Tuesday trained its guns on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, daring him to give up the Home portfolio and order a probe into allegations of a senior journalist who has alleged in a social media post that he had seen a CPI(M) leader, who is a minister in the present Cabinet, collect large sums of money “gifted by several big shots”.

The development comes days after state police arrested state Congress president K Sudhakaran in a case of alleged complicity in a cheating scandal involving conman Monson Mavunkal, and the state Vigilance Bureau subsequently began an inquiry into a separate complaint that the Congress MP had allegedly amassed wealth beyond his known sources of income.

While G Sakthidharan, a former senior journalist with Deshabhimani, the CPI(M) mouthpiece in the state, did not name the leader of the Marxist party, the Congress brought Vijayan into the centre of the allegation.

The CPI(M) did not immediately react to the allegations. Senior Congress legislator and Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly, V D Satheesan, said on Tuesday, “The disclosure should be probed. It is against Vijayan.”

Sakthidharan had served as a senior journalist with Deshabhimani years ago. He was known as a loyalist of party veteran V S Achuthanandan during the days of intra-party feud, with Vijayan seen to be on the other side.
