The Chandigarh Residents’ Associations Welfare Federation (CRAWFED) has objected to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation sending letters to area RWAs for bringing in a recommendation or consent of area councillor, else their allotment regarding maintenance of green space/open area and neighbourhood park would be cancelled.
The CRAWFED on Monday convened a meeting of the Core Committee under the chairmanship of Hitesh Puri. Rajat Malhotra, Dr Anish Garg, Rajesh Rai and other members were present.
After the meeting, a letter was shot off to the city administrator, municipal commissioner and city mayor, in which it was said the RWAs have been maintaining all the parks or neighbourhood parks or green spaces for many years.
“It is unfair to ask them to sign a fresh MoU again after taking consent from the area councillor. Moreover, many of these RWAs have been awarded by the Municipal Corporation for beautiful maintenance. If the Municipal Corporation has passed such a resolution in the House, then it should be used only for the maintenance of new parks,” Puri said.
Puri added that it has come to the notice of CRAWFED “that some leaders are planning to snatch the park maintenance contract from RWA and give it to their favourites”, which will “not just increase corrupt activities but also bring in mutual disputes among the residents”.
The letters sent to the area RWAs maintaining the parks stated, “The House unanimously considered and approved that the contracts of parks, green belts or toilets of the respective wards would be allotted only with the consent of the area councillor concerned.”
It was said “it is therefore requested to submit the consent/recommendation of the elected area councillor to your association within a week, otherwise the work of maintenance of neighbourhood parks will be taken back from your association”.
