A day after the Wadi Rang Mahal area in the city witnessed tensions following a clash between two groups from different communities, Vadodara police on Monday arrested 15 of 18 accused involved in rioting, officials said. The accused were booked in a case over rioting on Sunday night in the old city area. The incident was followed by a petty altercation amid a road rage incident, police added.
An FIR was filed at the Panigale police station against 18 persons from two communities for the alleged involvement in rioting and stone pelting in the Wadi Rang Mahal area.
Yashpal Jaganiya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone III, said “There was no accident or collision. A car that had passengers from the minority community and a motorcycle driven by members of the other community came face-to-face. It resulted in an altercation that snowballed into a riot. We have booked members of both communities in the FIR after identifying them. Eight persons were arrested on the spot. They have also been booked for damaging public property. One of our staff personnel has sustained minor injuries,” Jaganiya said.
After people from one of the communities – travelling in a car – got involved in an altercation with motorcycle-borne youth from another community in a narrow alley of the area, mobs belonging to both communities came face to face and began pelting stones, officials said.
As the police personnel swiftly intervened in the clash to contain the situation, the mob also damaged the PCR (Police Control Room) van and assaulted a policeman on duty.
