Mayors from over 60 cities, including 42 foreign cities, are likely to attend the Urban20 (U20) Mayoral Summit in Ahmedabad next week, with revamping multilateral funding institutions and decentralisation of governance mechanisms in urban areas among the possible topics of discussion, according to sources involved with the event.

The Mayoral Summit will be the culmination of the work of the U20 engagement group under G20. “This Mayoral Summit is expected to bring together several city leaders and Mayors from across G20 nations. The summit will also be attended by delegates representing various cities, knowledge partners, Indian and international organisations, academic institutes and dignitaries from the Government of India and the State Government,” the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

According to sources, mayors or equivalent, including deputy mayors, from 67 cities had already confirmed their participation. Out of these, 42 are from foreign cities. Mayors or deputy mayors from cities like London, New York and Paris and Governor of Tokyo were among those expected, they said. At least 33 nations are likely to be represented at mayoral summit.
