One person died after a fire broke out at a residential tower in Mumbai’s Santacruz (East). The incident was reported around 1.45 am Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Nagin Lakhu, 86. Lakhu inhaled smoke and was taken to V N Desai Hospital, where she was declared dead.

According to Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the fire started on the third floor of the eight-storeyed building, inside a locked apartment.

MFB officials said smoke engulfed the passage of the third floor. They also maintained that the flames were doused by the residents of the building.

“The fire was extinguished by the common public by breaking the lock and key of the flat in which the blaze erupted. The locals used buckets of water and domestic fire extinguishers for dousing the fire,” said an official.

“After we arrived, we used high-pressure hose lines to extinguish the flames entirely. However, the damage control was done by the local residents due to which the flames didn’t spread,” the official said.
