The Bangur Nagar police recently arrested four men for allegedly stealing a 90 X 2.5 feet iron bridge weighing 6,000 kg from Malad (West) last month.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 11, Ajaykumar Bansal said the entire stolen iron structure, worth nearly Rs 2 lakh, has been recovered.

In this connection, an FIR was registered by Shashikant Misal, Assistant Vice-President of Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited, on June 26. According to the FIR, the complainant company had placed the metal bridge over a drain to move huge power cables in June 2022.

When a permanent bridge was constructed over the drain, the temporary make-shift structure was moved aside on April 18, 2023.

As the make-shift structure was lying defunct, thieves sensed an opportunity and they cut the iron structure using gas cutters and crane into easily transportable pieces. They then took away the iron pieces in a vehicle, said an official from Bangur Nagar police station.

On June 26, when the power company found out about the theft, they filed a police complaint. During their probe, the police found that the bridge was last seen by the employees of the complainant company on June 6.

Investigators ascertained that the bridge was stolen between June 6 and 26. But the ‘stealing’ of the bridge could not be captured on any CCTVs as the place of incident has no cameras. However, when police checked the CCTVs of shops alongside the roads heading to the spot, they found regular movement of a heavy vehicle towards the bridge, sources said.

Obtaining details from the RTO using the heavy vehicle’s registration number, the police traced the vehicle and found equipment used in cutting heavy metal objects and the dismantled iron bridge, another source added.

Later, four men responsible for the theft were nabbed last week one after another, the police said. The probe revealed that one of the four arrested accused is an employee of the contractor company that was given the contract to build the bridge.

The entire iron bridge stolen from the site has been recovered, DCP Bansal said.
