A taxi driver from Gonder village in Haryana’s Karnal district is among four arrested in Ambala Saturday for allegedly firing on Bhim Army Chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad on June 28. The Haryana STF and UP Police nabbed the four accused in a joint operation near a dhaba in the Shahzadpur area of Ambala district.

According to sources in the Haryana Special Task Force (STF), arrested taxi driver Vicky alias Vikas is nearly 20 years old. The other three accused are from Rankhandi village in UP’s Saharanpur. All four accused belong to the same upper caste.

A police officer said: “Vikas alias Vicky’s cousin is married in Rankhandi village. So, he used to go to Rankhandi and came in contact with these youths who were engaged in small works at the local level.”

On June 28, the police said, they were travelling in a car belonging to Vicky alias Vikas. The accused reportedly told the investigators they planned to attack Aazad as they were upset because of his statements. The accused allegedly fired “three shots” from a 315-bore pistol on Aazad’s Fortuner car.

A Haryana police officer said: “During the preliminary interrogation, the accused told the investigators that they were carrying two 315-bore pistols when they fired on the Bhim Army chief…”

He added: “During the preliminary interrogation, we came to know that one of the accused from Rankhandi has an attempt to murder case against him while a second is facing a case of assault… No case came into notice against Vicky alias Vikas of Gonder village. The accused told us their plan to attack Azad was sudden…”

The accused were handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police on Saturday itself.

“The four accused are friends and they used to prepare reels and upload them on social media,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police (Saharanpur) Sagar Jain.

On June 28, Aazad, 36, attended a ‘terahvin’ ritual at a supporter’s home in Saharanpur district’s Deoband and the assailants fired at his SUV when he was leaving. Aazad was injured and was discharged after treatment from a hospital in Saharanpur the next day.
