The Gujarat High Court Friday adjourned to July 21 the hearing of a review application by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in relation to a Gujarat University petition regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational degrees after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested more time.
Kejriwal sought a review of the HC’s March order where the court had allowed a Gujarat University petition and quashed an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) directing the university to “search for information” regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s educational degrees.
The review petition by Kejriwal notes that while the court had recorded that Modi’s degree is available on the university’s website following submissions made by SG Mehta on behalf of the university, “upon a scan of the said website… (it) is found that the said ‘degree’ is not available, but a document referred to as OR (Office Register) is displayed”.
Kejriwal has submitted that the display of the “degree” on the university’s official website is taken as the preliminary and main ground for seeking a review of the court’s earlier order. He alleged that with the degree not being available on the website, the judgment thus “suffers from the error apparent on the face of the record and permitting them would lead to failure of justice”.
The HC had issued notice to GU on June 9, following which the insititute filed its reply in relation to the contentions being raised in the review application.
Kejriwal, in turn, filed a rejoinder to GU’s reply affidavit Friday. Before the court of Justice Biren Vaishnav Friday, Mehta indicated that he would need time to peruse the rejoinder.
“No difficulty in arguing but without knowing what he (Kejriwal in his rejoinder) has said (it will be difficult) because we found since beginning irresponsible statements are being made, maybe they are in this affidavit also. Let me go through it,” said Mehta.
