A 12-year-old boy was allegedly mowed down by a truck while returning home from school in Outer Delhi’s Nangloi Monday afternoon, police said.
DCP (Outer) Harendra Singh they received a PCR call at Nangloi police station regarding the incident, following which a team rushed to the spot. It found that a truck had hit a boy.
“The body was sent to SGM Hospital in Mangolpuri and the crime team was called to inspect the scene. A case is being registered under the IPC section pertaining to causing death by negligence,” said the DCP.
Police said the accused truck driver has been apprehended and the vehicle seized.
The boy has been identified as Mani Ram, who studied in class 8 at a government school in Nangloi.
A senior officer said, “The truck was heading towards Peeragarhi from Bahadurgarh. Around 12 pm, the child was crossing the road to head home, which is around 15-20 minutes away from the school, when he got crushed by the truck. He used to walk home around this time every day.”
“During questioning, the driver said that he got distracted and lost control of the vehicle while driving on the stretch… The post-mortem is being conducted and a mechanical inspection of the truck will also be carried out. We have also submitted the accused’s alcohol test and are awaiting its results,” said another officer.
An eyewitness to the incident, requesting anonymity, said, “My son and I were a few metres away from the spot… the deceased used to study in class 8 and his mother used to work as a vegetable vendor. The boy had two siblings and the mother is their sole breadwinner.”
The boy’s father passed away a few years ago, said locals.
Meena, whose son studies at the same school as the boy, alleged that the road opposite the school was “unsafe” and often witnesses “speeding vehicles, mostly heavy vehicles”.
“The foot-over-bridge is also far away from where the school is and most of the school children have to cross the road… there should be enough traffic police officers on the road so those crossing the road have safe passage,” said Meena.
