Heavy rain continued to batter parts of Mumbai and Thane, where a yellow alert has been sounded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Friday. Yellow alert indicates possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The IMD has forecast another day of intense showers on Saturday as the yellow alert continues to be in place throughout Mumbai and Thane.
According to IMD reports, between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Friday, the Santacruz observatory recorded 36.3 mm of rainfall whereas the coastal observatory in Colaba registered 2 mm of rains. Between Thursday and Friday until 8.30 am, the Santacruz observatory recorded 54 mm of downpour.
Besides this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) recording apparatus found that until 6.00 pm on Friday, the maximum rain recorded in the eastern suburbs was 33.02 mm. The western suburbs recorded 26.04 mm followed by the island city division which experienced 12.46 mm of rainfall.
Following a day of incessant showers, the city woke up to spells of moderate rainfall on Friday. However, the intensity of showers picked up pace in the evening with the IMD issuing a nowcast warning at 4.45 pm, stating the possibility of moderate to intense spells of rain and gusty winds coupled with thunderstorm and lightning in isolated places of Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. A nowcast warning is the forecast of weather within a short period of time.
As heavy rains battered Mumbai, several pockets of the city were flooded owing to water logging. On Friday evening, the Andheri subway was closed and the traffic was diverted to Vile Parle’s Captain Vinayak Gore bridge. Though the subway was reopened shortly after the water was drained, traffic continued to pile along this route.
Furthermore, vehicular movement also slowed down along Kanjurmarg’s Gandhinagar junction and Sahara Star Ramnagar subway on Friday evening due to accumulation of water.
