India Meteorological Department(IMD) has issued an orange alert for coastal Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka during the course of the coming week, as heavy rainfall is forecast in the state during the period.
According to IMD, coastal Karnataka and parts of Malnad districts will receive heavy rainfall, with isolated spells of very very heavy rainfall, from Monday. Bengaluru and other South Interior Karnataka districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall from Tuesday. The orange alert is till June 6.
The forecast is expected to help agricultural activities in the state as sowing is affected due to massive deficit in rainfall during the first month of monsoon in June. According to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Karnataka received less than half the normal rainfall for the month of June.
Karnataka received 92 mm rainfall against a normal of 208 mm rainfall for the month, a shortfall of 56 per cent. The deficit was more pronounced in Malnad districts located in the Western Ghats, which is the prime catchment area for rivers flowing through the state. Malnad has received less than a third of the normal rainfall of 384 mm for June and received 102 mm. Coastal districts, which received around 873 mm during June, recorded 389 mm – a deficit of 55 per cent.
The improvement in monsoon conditions is also expected to increase inflow to reservoirs in the state, which currently hold water just a little above dead storage limit. Lack of adequate showers during June meant that inflows have trickled to the key reservoirs of the state. For instance, inflow to Krishnarajasagar reservoir in Mandya district was 581 cusecs. During peak monsoon, inflow to the reservoir exceeds 40,000 cusecs.
