India and Egypt, two nations plagued by the problem of terrorism, have been working together to tackle the issue. As part of their continued efforts to combat terrorism, the third meeting of the India-Egypt Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism was held in New Delhi on February 16, 2023.
The meeting was attended by representatives of both countries, who discussed various issues related to counter-terrorism, including the current security scenario, regional and global threats, and measures to prevent and combat terrorism. The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (Counter Terrorism), Ministry of External Affairs, while the Egyptian delegation was headed by Ambassador Hazem Fahmy, Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Counter-Terrorism.
The discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of intelligence sharing, capacity building, and exchange of information and best practices. Both sides agreed to work closely to address the issue of financing of terrorism and to take steps to disrupt the financial networks of terrorist organizations.
In addition, the two sides discussed the role of social media in the radicalization of youth and the need to prevent the misuse of online platforms for terrorist purposes. They also emphasized the importance of countering the narrative of extremist groups and promoting moderate and tolerant values.
India and Egypt have a long history of cooperation in the field of counter-terrorism. The Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism was established in 2017 to enhance cooperation and coordination between the two countries in this critical area. The third meeting of the Group in New Delhi is a testament to the strong commitment of both India and Egypt to work together to combat the menace of terrorism.
