Industrialist Anil Ambani appears before ED

Industrialist Anil Ambani appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday morning. He was seen arriving at the anti-money laundering agency’s Ballard Estate office in south Mumbai.

It is not yet clear which case Ambani was called in connection with. Sources suggested that the Reliance Group chairman had possibly appeared to record a statement in a FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act) violation case.

In March this year, the Bombay High Court had directed the Income Tax (I-T) department not to take coercive action against Anil Ambani till March 17 on fresh penalty notices issued against him over its allegation that the Reliance (ADA) Group chief evaded Rs 420 crore in taxes on an amount of Rs 814 crore held in two Swiss Bank accounts.

Later, in April, the High Court continued his protection till further orders and stayed the show-cause notice and penalty demand issued to the industrialist by the Income Tax department under the Black Money Act.

It is also pertinent to note that the industrialist had, in the past, joined the ED’s probe in connection with the Yes Bank loan kickbacks case.
