International seminar on Global Ecosystem for a sustainable Earth: Celebrating Global Un-plastic Day at AIMS Institutes

Today, the biggest crisis that hunts our planet is the rampant use of plastic. Its prolonged and unscientific use leads to the release of various toxic chemicals into the air, causing public health hazards. In order to highlight the aftereffects of plastic pollution and to eliminate the uncontrolled use of plastic, Global Un-plastic Day is celebrated every year. In 2022, an “International Seminar on Global Ecosystem for a Sustainable Earth: Celebrating the Global Un-plastic Day” was held at AIMS institutes, Bangalore on 17 September 2022. The institution is proud to host such an event and provide an opportunity for the students and staff to learn about various green and sustainable initiatives. As part of the event, AIMS Centre for Sustainability organized a wide variety of programs, awareness campaigns, and a seminar pointing out the drawbacks of plastic and its destructive effect on nature, in addition to the keynote address by Mr. Erik Solheim, 6th Executive Director of UNEP, New York and State Guest of the Govt. of India and Govt. of Karnataka who highlighted various initiatives of the Indian Government and how we can create a sustainable ecosystem for a better tomorrow.

The 2022 Global Un-plastic Day celebrations in detail

It was a truly enriching experience for various stakeholders of AIMS Institutes, Bangalore during the international seminar on “Green Ecosystem For A Sustainable Earth” which was inaugurated by Dr. Meka Priyanandan Reddy, Chairperson of AIMS Institutes. The Keynote address was by Mr. Erik Solheim, 6th Executive Director of UNEP, New York, and State Guest of the Govt. Of India and Govt. Of Karnataka. Other dignitaries who attended and spoke at the seminar include Mr. Harsha Vardhan IRS, Commissioner GST & Founder Ahimsa, Mr. M N Natraj, Regional Director for the Southern States, NYKS, Union Ministry of Sports & Youth Govt. Of India, Mr. Sailesh Sehgal, Founder of Youth of India and Co-Founder of Youth for Green Hydrogen, and Mr. Arun Sivag, Founder & Artistic Director of Global Kulshretha. The Chairperson of AIMS Institutes, Dr. Meka Priyanandan Reddy received the award of recognition from Mr. Erik Solheim for the efforts put in by the institution in promoting the cause of sustainability and climate issues. The GRI report on the sustainability initiatives taken up by AIMS Institutes, the first educational institution in India to have undertaken this, has also been released during the conference. An MOU on joint efforts to campaign to boycott plastics, combat climate change, and promote a sustainable global ecosystem was exchanged by AIMS Institutes with Youth of India, Ahimsa, Global Kulture, and Youth for Hydrogen. A tree plantation drive with the planting of fruit trees, part of the 10K tree plantation program of Ahimsa started in the Raj Bhavan, Bengaluru last month, was carried out in the AIMS Institutes campus at the culmination of the event.
