Days after pro-Khalistan slogans were found written on the wall of bus stand in Moga on June 12, the Punjab Police Friday arrested two persons in the case from Nanded, Maharashtra, and said that both suspects were “backed by mastermind Gurpatwant Singh Pannu”, Canada-based legal advisor of separatist organization “Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).”
While SFJ was banned by the Government of India, Pannu has been booked in several sedition and terror cases in Punjab for allegedly running pro-Khalistan campaigns from foreign soil.
Moga police Friday said that both suspects arrested for allegedly putting up pro-Khalistan slogans at the bus stand were given Rs 80,000 by “anti-national forces to create unrest in Punjab.”
The arrested persons were identified as Daljit Singh (30) of Churchak village and Pritpal Singh (28) of Gholian Khurd village in Moga district. Both had fled to Maharashtra, said police.
Moga SSP J Elanchezhian said that they were arrested from Nanded, Maharashtra on June 24 and then brought to Punjab. They were produced in the court and their remand was taken for interrogation.
In a tweet, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav said: “In a major breakthrough, @MogaPolice has busted a gang of anti-social elements writing Khalistan Zindabad slogans in public places backed by mastermind Gurpatwant Singh Pannu.”
Moga SP (investigation) Ajay Raj Singh said that both suspects worked with a US-based trucking company and were earning Rs 18-20k a month. “They received Rs 80,000 via Western Union money transfer from abroad for writing Khalistan slogans at the bus stand. Prima facie, the money came from an anti-national module being run by Pannu. We will seek extension in their remand for further interrogation and nominate Pannu in the case as the probe progresses.”
Both men do not have any past criminal record. An FIR in the case was registered under sections 153-A, 153-B and 505 of IPC at Moga city police station.
