Lion Akshit becomes the first wild pet of Lalru based industry

Lion Akshit, an Asiatic lion of Chhatbir Zoo on Friday became the first animal to be adopted by an industrial unit in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aashika Jain said that recently during her visit to the Chhatbir Zoo, the zoo administration apprised her of the adoption scheme of the animals and sought her help to mobilise prominent persons including students, teachers, and NGOs of the district to come forward for the cause.

The DC added that with the efforts of the district team, General Manager, Arshjit Singh, a philanthropist from ALP Nishikawa Company Private Limited from Lalru, Dera Bassi came forward to adopt the animal.

“Even the donor was also anxious to have such a giant animal as its first adopted pet though in an enclosure at the zoo. The proud donor today submitted a cheque for ensuring proper upkeep of his wild pet for a year,” the DC added.

Kalpana K, Field Director of the Chhatbir Zoo while appreciating the donor said that this was the first time in the zoo when a private industry from the tricity has come forward for the cause of wildlife conservation by adopting a lion. She added that the donor’s name would be displayed on a board in front of the adopted animal’s enclosure. Besides, he will get the privilege of being an ex-officio member of the Punjab Zoo Development Society and free visits to the Zoo four times a year.

She also said that one can contact on mobile number 98558-08072 for getting more information on the adoption scheme. Even students can adopt at the minimal cost of Rs 50 per month.
