More than a year after getting suspended over angadia extortion case, IPS officer Saurabh Tripathi has been reinstated by Maharashtra government Wednesday. Tripathi was wanted in the angadia extortion case for allegedly demanding a monthly bribe of Rs 10 lakh to allow the angadias to run their businesses.
A minister said, “The suspension has been revoked and he will be given a new posting soon. It will be a non-executive posting.”
Tripathi served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police zone II Mumbai when an FIR was registered against him last year at LT Marg police station. Along with him, three other cops were entangled in the extortion case.
Inspector Om Wangate, who was among those alleged of extorting Rs 19 lakh from angadias in south Mumbai revealed during interrogation that they acted upon Tripathi’s instructions. His name was added on March 9 last year after Wangate’s revelation.
The case was registered at LT Marg police station on February 18, 2022 based on the complaint of Bhuleshwar Angadia Association. Along with Wangate, Inspector Nitin Kadam and Assistant Inspector Samadhan Jamdade were charged of Sections dealing with extortion, robbery and wrongful restraint of the Indian Penal Code.
A preliminary inquiry by the then Additional Commissioner of Police (south) found that the three had in the first week of December 2021 allegedly extorted Rs 19 lakh from angadias in south Mumbai upon threatening them of reporting to the Income Tax department, the FIR said.
Tripathi, the then DCP, went missing the next day and appeared before the cops for interrogation based on court orders in November last year. The three officers were arrested on March 16.
