TWO MONTHS after an unidentified person was found hanging from a tree in Tilak Nagar area in a suspected case of suicide, the police found that the person had been murdered and arrested two persons Wednesday in connection with the case.
The breakthrough in the case came after a witness claimed that he had seen the two accused beat up the deceased.
Senior inspector of Tilak Nagar police station Deepak Bagul said that on April 19, the police found the body of an unidentified person hanging from a tree near Holy Family school in Chembur.
There was nothing to identify the deceased and prime facie it appeared to be a case of suicide. The local Tilak Nagar police station lodged an accidental death report in the matter.
Police said that recently they found a witness who told them that he had seen two persons fighting with the deceased and bearing him up brutally.
Based on his statement, the police started looking for the two persons based on CCTV cameras. The duo were identified as Gautam Borde alias Taklya (28) and Afzal Shaikh (20), both Chembur residents.
The duo were detained by the police for interrogation.
The senior inspector said that so far they have not been able to establish the identity of the deceased.
Bagul said, “During the course of interrogation, they duo said that the deceased was drunk and was abusing them. The accused got angry and beat him to death. Later they took away anything that would identify him and hung him from the tree to make it appear as a case of suicide.”
The officer said that the duo were arrested and produced before the court which remanded them to police custody.
