An FIR was filed against 11 people on charges of rioting and molestation after they  allegedly protested and manhandled a couple living in a private housing colony on Mira Road for bringing home goats to be sacrificed for Bakrid.

According to personnel of Mira Road police station, the FIR was filed on the complaint of Yasmin Khan, who lives with her husband and a four-year-old son in Estela Building, Vinay Nagar,  on Mira Road.  The couple had bought two goats couple of days ago for sacrifice on Bakrid and had kept them inside their flat.

On Tuesday evening, when they returned from the market after shopping, 15 to 30 people, including a few residents, stopped them at the society gate.

“They checked our car and questioned my husband on bringing goats and and keeping them inside the flat. They threatened that they would (forcefully) take the goats from our flat. To this my husband reacted and they started manhandling us… During the scuffle they also tore my clothes, forcing me to call police,” Khan said in her statement to police.

“They did not allow us to enter the society and called us terrorists… said we should not be allowed to stay in the society,” added in the FIR. Based on Khan’s complaint, police booked 11 people.

A police officer said that the builder of the colony had earlier allotted some space in the society to keep goats during Bakrid. Later, he cancelled permission for the same and informed the Muslim members to organise a meeting with the society committe to request for space to keep goats during Bakrid.

As per Khan’s claim in the FIR, the society committee delayed the meeting and later informed the Muslim members that there was no space in the society that can be given for keeping goats. They also mentioned that giving permission to keep goats doesn’t fall under the ambit of society’s rights, officer added.

Anticipating protest from other members, the Muslim members of the society  had informed inormed the Kashimira police station about the issue in advance. Police then held a meeting of the society members and served notices warning them not to indulge in any practice that affects peace.

Despite this, some members of the society along with some outsiders, protested Muslim members keeping goats in their flats and prevented Khan couple from entering the society, along with manhandling them, another officer said.

The protesting residents told mediapersons that the society rule did not allow livestock inside the premises but some residents violated it and brought two goats inside. “We are opposing it and will not allow it,” said a resident.

No arrest has been made yet in the case, police said.
