A total of 1,391 students from Delhi government schools have cleared the NEET this year, which is more than 496 such students in 2021, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while felicitating these students on Saturday along with those who cleared the JEE.
As many as 730 students from Delhi government schools have cleared JEE Mains, while 106 have cleared JEE Advanced, Kejriwal said. In 2021, 64 students had cleared JEE Advanced, while 384 students had cleared JEE Mains, Kejriwal said, noting that these numbers have been increasing in the past few years.
Education Minister Atishi, who felicitated the students along with Kejriwal at Thyagaraj Stadium, said that girls from Delhi government schools have outperformed boys in the NEET, with 933 girls and 458 boys having cleared the exam this year.
Kejriwal said: “When we formed the government in Delhi eight years ago, we were all new to politics. Our vision was to provide good quality education to all children in Delhi, whether from rich or poor families. This is because we were clear that without good quality education for our children, we can never become a developed nation. Then, we started working on this. The work was not easy, but it was also not impossible. In eight years, Thyagaraj stadium, which is full today, is filled with success.”
Students who spoke at the function, some of whom said they had not gone for coaching for the exams, thanked their teachers and schools for support, extra classes and books that helped them prepare.
Durgesh Sharma, who scored 592 marks in NEET, said that the situation at home was such that he had to work at a shop. “I was getting paid Rs 500 for four hours of work… I’m not sure about MBBS, but I may be able to get admission to BDS. Teachers in school have helped me a lot, even financially, and with books. The librarian in school helped provide me with books for the exam,” he said.
Devyani Sharma, a student who spoke at the function, said, “I have qualified the NEET only because of the free NEET/JEE coaching provided by the Delhi government… I could not believe that I was able to qualify this time… I am a cricket player and I play for the Delhi team, under-19.”
Kejriwal said: “Today it makes me very happy to see that schools which in 2013 were considered to be terrible, have now become so good. At that time if a poor family in Delhi had two children – a boy and a girl – and if they had little money, then the practice was to send the boy to a private school and the girl to a government school. After a year or two, the girl was taken out of the government school as the parents thought that there was no point in sending them to school. The dropout ratio in government schools was very high.
