Stating that leniency cannot be shown on drunken driving as it can cause severe accidents, a magistrate court on Wednesday sentenced to three months’ simple imprisonment a man whose car rammed three other cars in South Mumbai while he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

On August 24, 2017, the accused’s car had rammed one car near Jaslok Hospital and while trying to flee, bumped into two more cars.

“In the present matter, accused is held guilty for rash and negligent driving as well as driving vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Drunk driving leads to a higher risk of accidents, injuries and fatalities on the road. Because intoxicated drivers have impaired judgment, slower reaction time and deceased concentration making them more likely to cause severe accident,” metropolitan magistrate Nadeem A Patel said in the order convicting the 37-year-old man.

During the trial, the men driving the three cars which were dashed into deposed about the incident.

The accused had claimed that the car did not ram the vehicles but that the incident took place as he had to apply sudden brakes.

The court said that if that was the case, his car would have only hit one vehicle and not three.

The court also said that the alcohol content in his blood sample was higher than the permissible limit.
