Amid demands for new emerging engineering courses, a Government Resolution (GR) was passed on Wednesday to restructure existing seats and new engineering programmes in government engineering and polytechnic colleges.
To be implemented from the 2023-24 session, 210 seats in degree engineering colleges have been increased while another 270 seats have been shifted and admission to 870 seats has been frozen. In the postgraduate courses, 54 seats have been increased and 72 have been shifted in government engineering colleges. Similarly, in government polytechnic colleges, 360 seats in diploma courses have been increased, 90 seats shifted and 390 frozen.
“The restructuring committee has suggested these changes keeping in view the NEP (National Education Policy) 2020, AICTE provisions, admission data of engineering admissions and choice expressed by students at the time of filling their branches and requirements from the industry,” stated the GR issued by the education department Wednesday.
The new diploma and degree courses opened in government polytechnic and engineering institutes are automobile, computer, IT, and ICT (Information and Communications Technology), along with the traditional branches like civil and electronics and communications, mechanical and electrical.
The new courses in postgraduate programmes with 18 seats each in government engineering colleges are mechanical-CAD/CAM, IT, Civil, power electronics, EC, VLSI design, and electric vehicle.
