No more hiding in the back: Zoom’s Intelligent Director feature gives everyone a close-up

As the corporate world shifts to hybrid and in-office work models, video conferencing apps that thrived during the pandemic are seeking to innovate. Zoom has announced an Intelligent Director feature that allows everyone in a conference room – regardless of their position and visibility – to be seen up close and personal.

Designed for mid-to-large-sized rooms, the feature helps people in a meeting have the same opportunity to be seen and heard as everyone else. The software focuses on each participant’s face, intelligently tracking them as they move and finding their best view so that they always display on the screen.

“The traditional conference room experience can come at the cost of clarity and transparency. Someone can get lost in the back of the room, or left out if they’re not in the office. Meaningful connections can’t be mutually exclusive with a physical location — we have to find ways to share information in real-time, regardless of where people are,” says Zoom.

To use the Intelligent Director feature, you would need a suitable setup with multiple supported webcams installed across the room. Zoom has collaborated with several webcam companies to ensure compatibility with webcams such as AVer Cam550, the Poly e70, and the Yealink UVC 86. Meanwhile, the minimum system requirements are an Apple M1 chip or an Intel i5 processor.

Intelligent Director is available in beta as part of the Zoom Rooms 5.15.0 update. It’s currently only supported on Windows and Mac platforms, but support will be expanded soon.
