Omar: If applied, UCC has to be uniform for all

Stating that if implemented, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has to be “uniform for everyone”, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said an impression is being created that the UCC is only for Muslims.

But if other communities are exempted from UCC, Muslims will not just seek it but also get it, he said.

“If you decide to exempt someone — whether the person is a Christian, a Dalit, a tribal or a Sikh — then it is evident that Muslims will also not just seek exemption but also get it,” Omar told the media in Srinagar.

Omar’s criticism of the UCC came after former J&K CMs Mehbooba Mufti and Ghulam Nabi Azad warned the Centre against trying to implement it.

On the BJP raking up plans to implement the UCC, Omar said, according to PTI, “Every party has the right to place its agenda before people and seek votes… It is another matter that we do not personally like BJP’s agenda. But it is their democratic right…”
