One dead in Byculla tree collapse, another injured

For the second day in a row, heavy rain led to a tree fall, killing one person and injuring another at the Indu Oil Mill compound in Byculla East on Thursday.

Police said a huge banyan tree on the compound got uprooted in the rain and fell on a hut  around 2.30 am. Rehman Khan (22) and Rizvan Khan (20) who were injured were rushed to civic-run JJ Hospital where Rehman was “brought dead”. Rizwan sustained minor injuries on his right leg and  is said to be stable.

Sanjay Manjrekar, chief fire officer of Mumbai Fire Brigade, told The Indian Express that the personnel carried out the rescue operation and cleared the uprooted tree using electric saw, axes and other devices, including a pneumatic lifting jack.

According to the civic body, 13 trees fell between 8 am and 6 pm on Thursday with the maximum number of incidents in the western suburbs at nine, followed by three cases in the island city. Meanwhile, the eastern suburb witnessed one instance of tree collapse.

On Wednesday, two people were killed in separate incidents of tree fall in the western suburbs of Mumbai amid heavy rain. While a 38-year old man lost his life when a decayed banyan tree fell on him in Malad’s Mamlat Darwadi Junction, in another case of tree collapse, a man died when branches of a dead palm tree came crashing down on a temporary structure at Goregaon’s M G road.
