The Uttar Pradesh Police has directed every district in the state to identify 20 cases of “serious crimes” every month so that trials in such cases could be completed within 30 days of filing of the chargesheet.
The latest directive is part of a new initiative, “Operation Conviction.” Apart from child sexual abuse cases filed under the POCSO Act, those related to rape, murder, robbery, dacoity, illegal religious conversion and cow slaughter will be included in this operation.
“ After the chargesheet is filed in such cases, charges will be framed within three days, and the trial will be concluded within 30 days… The district police chief will monitor these cases and hold meetings with monitoring cells. They will try to get the cases tried in fast-track courts on a day-to-day basis in coordination with the district judge,”Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Vijaya Kumar said.
According to the DGP, police will work in close coordination with the forensic teams in such cases and a web portal is being developed through which a senior officer at state police headquarters will monitor such cases on a weekly basis.
