Opposition cries foul: ‘Unfortunate & murky’

Opposition party leaders in the state from Congress, Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena termed the induction of NCP legislators into Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led government as an unfortunate development for a democracy and the Constitution, and highlights the murky politics of Maharashtra.

Congress Legislature Party leader and MLA Balasaheb Thorat expressed regret on joining NCP legislators in the government, stating that the move did not bode well for democracy and the Constitution. “The swearing-in incident is very unfortunate for democracy and the constitution.

It is worth worrying about how the country will fare in the future. We work to take the party, it’s ideology and thought forward. If the game of wanting power permanently doesn’t stop then our democratic system will be in trouble. It is worrying that since 2014, democracy and the Constitution as well as the anti-defection law has been under attack. People of the state are watching today’s events with a keen eye. Only they will decide and people’s court is the best court,” Thorat said.

He said further that everything was being done by the BJP to gain and retain power. “Democracy is crumbling. It is certainly worrying that the chief NCB leaders have chosen power. People have been watching how the political game has been playing out in the state since last year. People do not want such politics. BJP’s modus operandi is to do anything to grab power. They were criticizing each other until yesterday, but have come together today. Matters are favourable for Mahavikas Aghadi in the state. Surveys have predicted that MVA will win 38 seats in Lok Sabha and 180 seats in the Legislative Assembly. So, BJP is uncomfortable,” Thorat added.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray also took to Twitter on Sunday, terming the state’s political status as murky. “Sharad Pawar was keen on discarding the burden of Uddhav Thackeray. The first act of this process was played out today. The first team from NCP camp has left to gain power, and the remaining team will join in soon. The state BJP was not happy with the unnecessary importance given to Eknath Shinde, and they have found a way to counter him. I am heartbroken to see how politics is playing out in Maharashtra, a state that provided direction to India,” Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Supremo Raj Thackeray said on the cabinet expansion.

Sena UBT leader and MLA Aaditya Thackeray also slammed CM Shinde-led Sena and said that NCP legislators who joined Shinde government have joined for selfish reasons; now there will be a fight between the selfish and those who stand by their principles. “The original traitors (Shinde Sena) backstabbed us on the pretext that NCP leaders and ministers from their districts didn’t let them work. Today, the same people from NCP who were blamed for being roadblocks in Raigad, Nashik or other districts, were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers, he said, adding, “The traitors who complained against them had to quietly welcome them!”
