Patna conclave momentous, will alter course of politics: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

The conclave of the Opposition parties in Patna, which heralded the coming together of anti-BJP parties ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, was a “momentous event” that will alter the course of Indian politics, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said on Monday.

Chowdhury, who is also the chief of the West Bengal unit of the Congress, said the Opposition gathering has sent a great signal nationally.

“The Patna conclave is a momentous event in view of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It will trigger a great alliance against communal forces in India… it would alter the course of Indian politics,” Chowdhury told The Indian Express.

Asked about the fractious and violent panchayat elections in Bengal in which Patna meeting participants Congress and the Trinamool Congress are pitted against each other, Chowdhury said the Patna conclave has nothing to do with the rural elections in his state.

“What has happened in Patna will not impact the panchayat elections in Bengal. Here, Mamata Banerjee is hurling allegations against us every day. We are also trying to expose her deficiencies in holding the panchayat elections. Already, the elections are marred by violence… every day reports about violence are coming out in the media also… so we cannot deny it,” he said.

But he argued that Congress’s fight against the TMC in the panchayat elections should not be “misconstrued” to suggest that “when our leaders are participating in the unity talks, we are not giving due importance to it”.
